Domaines Schlumberger Gewurztraminer Les Princes Abbes 2006
Region
Alsace, France
Introduction
Seven generations and nearly two centuries have passed since the founding of Domaines Schlumberger. In 1810, Nicolas Schlumberger established his vineyards on the renowned, sunny slopes above the town of Guebwiller. Through successive generations the holding has grown from the original few small plots to one of France’s largest and finest vineyards. Seventh generation Alain Beydon-Schlumberger runs the domaine.
Probably the most renowned wine in Alsace, Traminer comes from the North of Italy and dates back to the 16th century. Gewurztraminer (literally spiced or musky Traminer) is a selection of the most aromatic Traminers, and becomes Gewurztraminer 1950.
Grapes
100% Gewurztraminer
Viticulture
The majority of Gewurztraminer grapes are sourced from the BOLLENBERG and BUX vineyards. The remainder is made up with grapes from the young vines in the Grand Cru vineyards.
Wine Making
After slow pneumatic pressing the must is left to settle on the lees. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled tuns for between 1 and 4 months. The wine is then left to age for a further 6 to 8 months on the lees.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Golden yellow with light green reflections and good intensity.
Nose: Concentrated and distinguished. Exotic aromas of grapefruit, citrus and lychee are coupled with the floral characters of rose and peony. Aerating amplifies these scents but also reveals cumin and spices.
Palate: Full bodied and well integrated with de defined vinocity. The palate mirrors the nose but with distinctive spicy character. A classic Gewurztraminer profile and good long finish.
